About this condition
Cutaneous strongyloidiasis is a skin condition caused when hookworm larvae penetrate the skin, creating characteristic red, raised, itchy tracks that move slowly across the skin surface. The larvae migrate under the skin but cannot complete their life cycle in humans, eventually dying off within weeks. Common in those walking barefoot on contaminated beach sand or soil.
