About this condition

This is a serious bacterial infection caused by Vibrio vulnificus, a microbe found in warm seawater and raw seafood, particularly affecting coastal communities. The bacteria can cause severe wound infections if contaminated water contacts an open cut, or bloodstream infections if contaminated raw seafood is consumed. People with liver disease, diabetes, or weakened immunity are at highest risk of life-threatening complications.
